What is Involved in Scar Removal?
Scar removal, sometimes referred to as scar revision, is performed to minimize or greatly improve the appearance of a scar. Scar revision uses techniques and technology designed to help blend the tone and texture of the scar into the skin surrounding it.
There are a number of options available for scar removal, ranging from simple skin care treatments to more complex procedures.
How Much Does Scar Removal Cost?
The cost for scar removal depends on a number of variables that can impact the final cost, making it difficult to generalize. Costs for your specific case will be discussed during your initial consultation and you’ll be given an accurate amount at that time.
Most insurance companies don’t offer coverage for the cost of cosmetic procedures, so it’s best to contact your provider to find out which procedures they will or will not provide coverage for.
We strive to keep our procedures affordable for all of our clients. We’re pleased to offer financing as an option for your scar removal treatment through Alphaeon® or CareCredit®.
How Does Scar Removal Work?
There are several options for scar removal that will be discussed thoroughly during your initial consultation, and the doctor will create a treatment plan specific to your needs and aesthetic goals.
Some of the options she may offer include dermabrasion, laser resurfacing (such as Fractora), or excision of the scar as necessary. Her final choice will depend, at least in part, on the number, size, and type of scars you have, as well as their location on your body.
If laser treatment is used—as is often the case with acne scars—the laser directs heat deep into the skin tissue, causing the skin to tighten up, smoothing out the surface of the skin and lessening the appearance of the scar.
Dermabrasion is more often used on mild, shallow scars and is not usually as effective on deep scars. Scar excision is frequently performed on surgical scars and is a more invasive procedure than dermabrasion or laser treatments.
What Are the Benefits of Scar Removal?
Patients who have had scar revision or removal have typically been quite pleased with their results and the benefits are numerous. Some common ones include:
- Big boost in self-image and self-confidence
- Smooth, rejuvenated appearance of the skin
- Improved, less noticeable scar appearance
- Results are immediate and long-lasting
Am I a Good Candidate for Scar Removal?
If you’re an otherwise healthy adult non-smoker with no active acne outbreaks or any other skin issues in the treatment area, you’re probably a good candidate for scar removal or revision.
Dr. Mary Ann Contogiannis will explain how your scar revision treatment will work and make sure you have realistic expectations about what scar removal can do for you.
The two of you will work together to decide if scar removal is your best option. If not, alternative treatments that may serve you better can be explored.
What Can I Expect During Recovery Following Scar Removal?
You may have some swelling, bruising, or some level of discomfort following the procedure, but those symptoms will dissipate within a week or two. You’ll feel better but healing will continue for several more weeks. It can take from several months up to a year for full healing and scar fading to occur.
For optimal recovery results, be sure to read and closely follow any post-treatment instructions you may be given following your scar revision procedure.
