What is a Medical Spa?
Medical spas, also known as med spas or medi-spas, are typically an integration of a medical clinic and traditional day spa that provides noninvasive aesthetic procedures and cosmetic treatments and is supervised by a licensed physician, preferably a board-certified plastic surgeon. Generally, medical spas aim to address various cosmetic concerns of the face and body with non-surgical solutions using advanced technology, devices, and treatments for results-based aesthetic improvement.
Under the care of board-certified Greensboro plastic surgeon, Mary Ann Contogiannis, MD, the Renaissance Center for Plastic Surgery & Wellness offers a diverse range of products and procedures, including facials, dermal fillers, laser treatments, fat injections, chemical peels, and top-of-the-line skincare products.
What Are the Benefits of a Medical Spa Run by a Plastic Surgeon?
Ideally, when a medical spa is part of a plastic surgeon’s practice, it has the advantage of an overseeing physician that has completed the highest levels of training in aesthetic procedures and possesses a thorough understanding of the anatomical structures of the face and body. Some of the other benefits of a med spa run by a plastic surgeon include:
- Plastic surgeon usually works with the practitioners as a team in an advisory role
- Expectations of the practice to uphold maximum safety standards
- Practice typically has the expertise of the plastic surgeon in developing the treatment menu
- Daily operations are reviewed with a plastic surgeon’s guidance
- Plastic surgeon can supervise results when necessary and make recommendations
Additionally, a practice that is directed by a plastic surgeon offers the opportunity to create a highly customized treatment plan for each patient that may combine non-surgical and surgical solutions for optimized results (ex: a facelift and injectable fillers or surgical body contouring with cellulite reduction). Dr. Contogiannis and our skilled aesthetic team are dedicated to helping our patients achieve their cosmetic enhancement results in a well-rounded, comprehensive plan.

Dermal Fillers and Injectables
Dermal fillers and injectables, which are injected beneath the skin, are designed to diminish signs of aging in various areas of the face and body for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers, made of a gel-like substance, can add fullness to shallow contours, soften creases and wrinkles, plump lips, and restore volume in the cheeks, under-eye hollows, jawline, and other areas. Neuromodulator injectables, meanwhile, work to reduce or eliminate lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that contract and create creases over time. Our team takes great care to provide optimal results with best-in-class solutions, including BOTOX® Cosmetic, Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Dysport®, Sculptra®, Radiesse®, and fat transfer procedures, also known as fat injections, that highlight one’s natural beauty.
Body Enhancement Treatments
There are many body enhancement treatments that can produce effective results without the need for extensive downtime and recovery. Dr. Contogiannis and her team utilize the Endermologie system (an advanced massage and suction process) to eliminate cellulite and improve circulation; VTone vaginal rejuvenation (a single-use electrostimulator) to address vaginal dryness, loss of sensation, urinary incontinence, and vaginal laxity; and EvolveX treatment (radiofrequency energy and electromagnetic stimulation) to reduce body fat, tighten skin, and enhance muscle tone in the abdomen, waist, arms, inner and outer thighs, legs, and buttocks. Our med spa also offers body spa treatments to relax and rejuvenate with therapeutic wraps, polishes, cleanses, waxing services, and more.
Skin Rejuvenation and Facial Treatments
Skin rejuvenation and facial treatments can help to achieve healthier, glowing, more youthful-looking skin with an array of solutions to address a broad range of cosmetic concerns. Our practice offers advanced treatments to repair and refresh the skin, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and dermabrasion to remove damaged outer layers of skin for a brighter complexion and scar reduction; skin tightening (including Morpheus8 RF microneedling) to improve skin laxity and diminish lines and wrinkles; Vasculaze for spider vein treatment; various facials for soft and hydrated skin; acne treatment for clearer skin; eyelash enhancement; and more to promote healthy skin and a radiant appearance.
Laser and Light Treatments
Laser and light-based treatments can deliver powerful, versatile results to transform and renew the tone, texture, and appearance of skin. The advanced technologies and devices on offer at our practice are designed to address signs of aging and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne, scars, lesions, stretch marks, excess facial and body hair, large pores, redness and rosacea, brown spots, broken blood vessels or capillaries, and more. Our practice achieves laser skin resurfacing with various lasers, including CO2, Fractora™, and Sciton®; diminishes unwanted hair with the LightSheer® laser hair removal system; and treats skin conditions and imperfections with the Lumecca Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy system. Laser and light energy solutions are usually scheduled over a series of sessions to stimulate collagen production and encourage new cell turnover for noninvasive skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime.
Are Medical Spa Treatments Safe?
In general, non-surgical treatments are considered to be safe when they are performed by qualified and experienced providers, such as Dr. Contogiannis and her professional aesthetic team. Medical spas should be overseen by an onsite, licensed physician who is available to review medical history, oversee the quality of products and devices being used, and provide care should a complication arise. Certain treatments, such as neuromodulators and fillers, should be administered by a credentialed nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician, while other treatments may be performed by a licensed aesthetician. It is important to ensure your treatment is given by credentialed and licensed providers with adequate training to avoid issues like permanent scarring, infections, unsatisfactory results, hygiene issues, and more. An essential part of patient safety is the cleanliness of the facility and personnel administering the treatments, which should all follow stringent safety protocols. When selecting a med spa, be sure to choose one that adheres to all safety, health, quality, and credential regulations to ensure the best experience.
